On the subgroups of
free Burnside groups of large odd exponent
Alexander Y. Ol'shanskii of Vanderbilt
University and Moscow State University
I will start with known results on the subgroups of free groups in the
Burnside variety given by the law x^n = 1, where n is a large odd
number. Then I will focus on the recent solution of Adian's problem
from 1980. Namely, I proved that no proper normal subgroup of a free
Burnside group of large prime exponent is free in the variety of
Burnside groups.
