Course Description

This course was a 1-credit-hour elective course specifically for first-year undergraduate students. The goal of the program was to provide students a small class experience in the context of fun but academic subjects. The program that funded the course has been discountined.

In this course, students explored the relationship between art, mathematics, and a variety of crafting and fiber arts techniques, such as knitting, crochet, needlepoint, embroidery, cross-stitch, weaving, and quilting. By the end of the semester, they were able to:

  • Identify and describe connections between numerous fields of mathematics and a variety of fiber arts.
  • Apply skills (established or newly-learned) in the fiber arts to the creation of a mathematically-based project.

Check out Wikipedia for a brief but thorough overview of the relationship between mathematics and fiber art.
