Smart Applet
[Curve Sketcher v 0.6]
size=500x600 pixels
Sample Problem:
- x-intercept=4
- y-intercept=2
- f'(x)>0 on (-8,2)
- f'(x)<0 on (2,8)
- f'(2)=0, f(2)=5
- f''(x) >0 on (-8,0)
- f''(x) < on (0,8)
Instructions:
- Enter in the point x=2, y=3 and click "Local Max"
- Click on the left point (highlighted red square) enter x-value=0
and y-value=4, then click "Set Value"
- Click on the right point (highlighted red square) enter x-value=4,
y-value=2, then click "Set Value"
- Enter in a few more points (decreasing to the left)
- Enter in a few more points (decreasing to the right)
- Click the button "f inc" to show where the function is increasing,
and adjust the point near x=2 so that it has a local max at x=2
(trial and error!)
- Click "Grade" and see how you do!
- A more challenging problem illustrates
the eventual goal of the applet...
