Title: Mathematical Modeling in the Biopharma Industry

Abstract: Abstract: I will present three topics: 1) optimal control for drug regimen optimization, 2) tumor dynamics modeling for immunotherapy, and 3) getting a job in industry. 1)Combination therapy is increasingly important, but it can be challenging to determine the best possible dose levels to use. Instead of running experiments with all possible combinations of dose levels, we can use mathematical modeling and optimal control to predict the best regimen. This prediction can then be tested experimentally. I will show an example for optimizing combination therapy for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia, with constraints on the allowed dose levels. 2)Mathematical models have been used for years to describe tumor size dynamics in patients who have received treatment. With the recently-available immunotherapies, I proposed a new mathematical model to try to better capture the different observed tumor dynamics. I will use some standard methods used in the biopharma industry to compare previous models with the new model and to examine how well they fit the data. 3) Where are job openings for industry found, what background are companies looking for, and what should you include on a resume? I will give pointers for each of these questions.
