Title: Some recent results on the stability and modeling of multiphase porous media flows
Abstract:
We will survey some recent results on the hydrodynamic stability of incompressible porous media flows within the Hele-Shaw model in which an arbitrary number of interfaces separating immiscible fluids evolve within linear theory. Such stability theory for flows involving single interface is well developed but less so when there are many interfaces. These studies are essential before theoretical studies in nonlinear development of such multi-interface theory including singularity formations can be undertaken. Our study is also relevant for many applications and one such application will be discussed. In particular, the Buckley-Leverett model of multiphase porous media flow which allow mixing between different fluids, in contrast to sharp interfaces in Hele-Shaw model, will also be discussed with numerical method and simulation results. Part of this talk is based on my joint work with Craig Gin and Sourav Dutta.
