Research Experience for Undergraduates

REU Student Presentation - 2008
REU Student Presentation - 2008

Overview

The Department of Mathematics at Texas A&M will host an eight-week Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) from June 7 to July 30 (tentative dates) in the summer of 2010. Participants will have the choice of at least three programs: matrix/wavelets anaylsis, the mathematical modeling of ecology and physiology, and algebraic methods in computational biology. We expect between five and ten student participants for each program. Students from groups under-represented in mathematical research are especially encouraged to apply.

Summer 2010 Programs

 •   Matrix Analysis and Wavelets
 •   Mathematical Modeling in Ecology and Physiology
 •   Algebraic Methods in Computational Biology

Eligibility

Applicants should be highly motivated and successful undergraduates who are comfortable with basic matrix manipulations and elementary linear algebra. Students in the wavelets program should also have some exposure to analysis (epsilon-delta advanced calculus). Students in the ecological/physiological modeling program should have some background in differential equations. Students interested in pursuing statistical modeling in these areas should also have had an introductory statistics course. No special prior experience with mathematical software or computers is required. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents and must not have received their bachelors degree by the start of the summer program.

Stipend and Support

Participating students will be provided free on-campus housing, along with an anticipated stipend of $450 per week, plus subsidized travel to and from College Station.

Application Instructions and Deadlines

Interested students should fill out the on-line application form, mail us a copy (unofficial is fine) of their grade transcripts, and arrange for two letters of recommendation to be mailed directly to us. These recommendation letters should come from faculty who are familiar with the student's work. The transcripts and recommendation letters should be sent to:

Applications and supporting materials should arrive by February 15, 2010 to ensure full consideration. Early applications are encouraged. Students will start to be notified during March.
