Deleting attachments in Pine without deleting the message
There are times when a user might need to clear out his or her mailbox
in order to conserve disk space. One way of doing this is to delete old
emails with large attachments. In some cases, a message one wants to keep
might include a large attachment that the user no longer needs. The following
is a simple set of steps for the pine mail reader to remove the attachment
from an email, without deleting the message.
- In Pine, open the message you want to strip the attachment from.
- Type V (view) to view the attachments.
- Use D (delete) to mark the attachments you want stripped.
- Back up one level using < (back) so you are looking at the message.
- Type S (save) to save the message.
- You will be warned that saving this message will remove some of its contents
(i.e., the striped messages), and asked if you still want to do so, type Y (yes).
- Type in the folder you want to save the message to. You will most likely want
to type in the name of the folder the message is already in. On the other
hand, you could also type in a different folder name if you so choose. For
a list of folder's available, use <CTRL> - T (To Folders).
- The above command will make a copy of the message without the attachments you
selected for removal, and place that copy in the folder you chose. It will
also automatically mark the message with the attachments for deletion.
- All that's left is to press X (expunge) to finally remove the version of the
email that still contains the attachments.
- Pat yourself on the back, you've saved disk space!
Note: An interesting feature of this is that the saved message, the one without the
attachments, will include a line reminding the user that the message previously
contained attachments. It will also enumerate the file names of the attachments deleted.
