Senior IT Associate

Summary

This position provides technical support and operation of the Department of Mathematics computer systems; provides technical assistance on usage of system components to department personnel.

Duties

Provides individual faculty, staff, and graduate students with technical assistance on usage of system components that do not require a system analyst's attention; manages the Department's inventory records of computer equipment and ensures that broken or malfunctioning equipment is sent out for repair.

Assists in the installation, maintenance, and problem tracking of the Department's UNIX servers, including the CalClab machines; installs software and provides systems backup for all machines; assists in writing CGI scripts.

Perfoms PC diagnostics and miscellaneous programming tasks for department support.

Maintenance of departmental web applications.

Other Duties as Assigned.

Education and Experience

Required:
Bachelor's degree or any equivalent combination of training and experience. One year of experience may substitute for one year of education. One year of job-related experience. Use of standard office equipment and personal computers. Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment. Strong interpersonal communication skills. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in related area.


Student Technician

The Mathematics Department offers a wonderful opportunity for students to learn Unix system administration by working as a student technician. Applicants should be in good academic standing and should have some background in computing, particularly in a Linux environment. Responsibilities include general help desk activities, moving and setting up equipment, diagnosing hardware and software problems, coordinating hardware maintenance calls with vendors, and other duties as assigned by the systems support staff. Multiple positions are available for Fall 2005.
