AP Calculus AB Institute for Inexperienced Instructors

The AP Calculus AB Institute for new teachers will cover the content of the course, with an emphasis on approaching the material graphically and intuitively before practicing the analytical questions found in typical textbooks. Topics will include the following:
- Reflections on the 2009 AP exam and the workings of the test development committee
- Differential equations
- Differential calculus
- A behind-the-scenes look at the process of creating AP Calculus free response questions
- Resources for motivating discussions and encouraging student discovery
- Applications of differential calculus, chain rule for paths and directional derivatives
- The 2008 AP Calculus reading
What participants should bring:
- Graphing calculator, if available
AP Calculus Consultant Wanda Savage
Klein Forest High School, Houston, Texas.
Wanda Savage introduced the AP Calculus AB program at Klein Forest High School in Houston, Texas, in 1992, where she is chair of the mathematics department, serves as the Academic Decathlon coach and teaches calculus BC, calculus AB and pre-calculus dual credit. She also teaches calculus 1 as an adjunct professor for Lone Star College: North Harris. As a consultant for the College Board, Ms. Savage has made numerous presentations at AP institutes and educational conferences throughout the southwest region. She has served as an AP Calculus exam reader for eight years. She is a recipient of a Mellon Foundation fellowship grant and received the College Board’s AP Special Recognition Award in 2001 and 2008. Ms. Savage holds a BA in mathematics from Lamar University and an MA in mathematics from Sam Houston State University.
