MATH 151 - Linux MATLAB Setup for Calclab

(NOTE: This setup is for Linux workstations only, such as your calclab account.)

Here is a checklist for today's MATLAB setup. First you'll login to your CalcLab account and set up your Linux MATLAB environment. Once this is complete, you will be introduced to Maplets and begin working on those assigned for this week. Next week (08-10 Sept), your TA will organize you into teams---typically groups of four---to work on the first MATLAB assignment.

  1. You have used your NetID and NetID password to login to your CalcLab account. (This is the one you use to login to Howdy, open access lab computers, etc.)
  2. You should also have opened a web browser (Firefox or Chrome) and been to your Course homepage (www.math.tamu.edu/courses/math151/). Click on this link which will open in a new tab. If you wish to bookmark this page or make it your homepage, you may do so.
  3. Here's how to set up your Linux MATLAB environment on your CalcLab account (NOTE: This is NOT the Matlab program itself, but a directory structure for storing your work and some Matlab worksheets and functions we will use later).
    • Right-Click on the following Zip file, then select "Save Link As..." In the ensuing dialog box, choose your Home directory before clicking on "Save". (Do NOT save the folder on your desktop! Note that is an "ell" in the filename, NOT a one.))
    • Open a terminal window by single-clicking on the icon which looks like a monitor at the bottom of your screen. At the command prompt enter "unzip MATLAB5e_lnx.zip" without the quotes. Wait for the extraction to complete. Then delete the Zip file by typing the command "rm MATLAB5e_lnx.zip" and pressing Enter.
  4. Invoke MATLAB by SINGLE clicking on the gold hill icon in the bottom panel. Patiently wait while the program loads. When you see "Ready" in the lower left corner of the MATLAB window, you're set.
  5. Your last task is to make your MATLAB interface somewhat simpler.
    • Click on the Desktop menu. Uncheck the Workspace radio button.
    • Repeat, this time unchecking the Command History radio button.
    • You have a Current Folder panel on the left and the main Command Window on the right. Resize the two panels by moving the vertical dividing line between them. (The Current Folder panel can be quite narrow; just enough space to show file names and extensions.)
    • Double-click on the proto subdirectory in the Current Directory window. Then double-click on the g5c0p000x02.m M-file. Now dock the editor! (Click on a downward-pointing arrow in the upper right corner of the editor. Ask if you need help.)
    • Finally, click on the Desktop Menu, then select Save Layout. Give it a name, say FirstName1; e.g., David1.
  6. You should have received a link to a Pre-Semester Survey in your email. Please open a new tab and open the link in your email now. If you did not receive a link, go to the Lab Schedule in the next tab and click on the word "HERE" under Week 1. Complete the survey at this time.
  7. Finally (after reading all of these instructions), enter the URL or click the link for Maplets: m4c.math.tamu.edu. This page contains many Java applets which you might find useful to understand the concepts of and practice problems related to the course. You may be taking quizzes over the content of these Maplets in recitation, and they are a good tool to help you prepare for exams. Bookmark this page for ready reference. To enter the site, click on "Texas A&M Univ" in the upper right corner, then log in with your NetID and password. You will then have your Lab Schedule open in one tab and the Maplet homepage in another. Once everyone has completed setup, your TA will demonstrate how to run these Maplets and how to access them outside of class. Until then, you may try running the Maplets listed on your lab schedule on your own.
