7:30 PM, Blocker 158
A contest to determine who can compute integrals fastest. All integrals are at the level of Math 152/172 or BC Calculus.
Prizes Include (besides the honor)
-
TI-Nspire Calculator (High School Students only),
TI Connect Software,
-
TI-83 Simulators,
-
2 copies of Maple 11,
-
Maple Cheat Shirts (These have Tables of Trig Identities and Integrals on the front and back. They may not be worn to exams!)
-
Math Department T-shirts.
Rules

Qualifying Rounds
-
Bring paper and pencil.
-
There will be 5 or 6 rounds. Everyone in the audience will be eligible.
-
In each round, an integral will be displayed on the overhead screen.
A time limit (between 1 and 5 minutes) will be imposed. At the end of the time limit, you must be holding your paper above your head, showing your solution and answer.
Each participant with a correct answer and solution will receive an Integral Buck ( a coupon).
-
At the end of 5 or 6 rounds, the participants with the most Integral Bucks will become contestants. We will take about 6 high school students, 6 undrgrads in Math 152/172, 6 undergrads above Math 152/172, and 6 grad students and faculty. These contestants will move to the front rows of the room.
-
Elimination Rounds
-
In each round, between 2 and 12 contestants will be at the white board. An integral will be displayed on the overhead screen. The half of the contestants who correctly compute the integral will continue to subsequent rounds. The half who are slowest will be eliminated.
-
A time limit (between 1 and 5 minutes) will be imposed.
-
In each round (except the last) the elimination is only between students at the same level: (a) high school students, (b) undrgrads in Math 152/172, (c) undergrads above Math 152/172, and (d) grad students and faculty.
-
The last round will be just for fun and consist of just the four 1st place winners in the four categories and the Wild Card.
-
Wild Card
-
During the Elimination Rounds, the first three participants in the audience to correctly compute the integral will receive an Integral Buck.
-
At the end of the Elimination Rounds, the participant with the most integral bucks will be the Wild Card winner.
-
Each contestant at the white board who completes the integral, will get an Integral Buck. Each contestant not at the white board will be eligible to be one of the three participants in the audience to receive an Integral Buck.
