About Math Awareness Month
Mathematics Awareness Month is sponsored each year by the
American Mathematical Society, the
American Statistical
Association, the Mathematical
Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied
Mathematics to recognize the importance of mathematics. In year
2005 the theme of the Awareness Month is Mathematics and
the Cosmos.
Planned activities:
- Poster Contest (submit entries
by March 25th)
- Special lectures (detailed info):
- April 6: Joseph Silverman (Brown University) Taxicabs and
Sums of Two Cubes: An Excursion in Number Theory
- April 18: David Sutherland (Councillor of Pi Mu Epsilon) Combinatorics and
Algebra: Permutations and Tableaux
- April 25: Alexei Belyanin (Physics, TAMU) A cosmic
surveyor: measuring distances in the Universe
- Math Mini Fair (April
9th):
- Problem solving contest (contact the organizers to get the solutions)
- Presentations by math and physics professors
- Pizza lunch
- Prizes for the posters and problems
Where:
All activities are taking place in Blocker Building of Texas
A&M University. Here is a map with
