About Math Awareness Month

Mathematics Awareness Month is sponsored each year by the American Mathematical Society, the American Statistical Association, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics to recognize the importance of mathematics. In the year 2008 the theme of the Awareness Month is Math and Voting.

Planned activities:

  • Math Mini Fair: Sat April 19th, Blocker Building, room 120, unless noted otherwise.
    9:00-9:30 Registration and Refreshments
    9:30 Opening
    9:35-12:45 Mathematical Games and Exhibits, room 114; Computer Activities, room 125
    9:00-11:00 Final round of the Math Talent Search, room TBD
    10:00-11:00 Problem Solving Contest for students of all grades and parents
    11:15-11:45 Presentation by Peter Kuchment (Texas A&M) Mathematics and Voting
    12:00-12:30 Pizza Lunch; Screening of movie Hypercube (15min); rooms 114 and 120
    12:30-1:00 Presentation by Jay Walton (Texas A&M) From Tiger Stripes to Bird Migration - Mathematical Modeling Nature's Patterns
    1:00-1:30 Awards
