Ninth International Conference on Approximation Theory

Loew's Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel, Nashville, TN

January 3 -- 6, 1998

The conference will be similar to the ones held previous years in Texas except that it will be only 4 days instead of 5. There will be one-hour invited lectures by Peter Borwein, David Donoho, Tim Goodman, Fran Narcowich, Amos Ron, Ed Saff, and Mary Wheeler. The second Popov Prize Winner will be announced at the meeting and will also present a one-hour lecture.

Eight minisymposia have been organized on Complex Approximation, Wavelets, Neural Networks, Abstract Approximation, Computer-Aided Geometric Design, Radial Basis Functions, Splines, and Classical Approximation.

Participants are invited to present 15 minute talks in a series of contributed sessions. To be included in the program, you need to send a 1/3 - 1/2 page abstract to the organizers by the deadline of November 15, 1997. A two volume proceedings will be published by Vanderbilt University Press. Contributed papers based on the presentations at the meeting will be refereed and edited. Instructions on when and how to submit papers will be distributed at the meeting.

Full information can be obtained by looking at the conference home page on the web. The following is a short version of the main points.

Preregistration. If you are interested in attending the meeting, please send an email message to at98@math.vanderbilt.edu as soon as possible. If you do not have email, send us a letter.

BBQ Preregistration. Instead of the traditional banquet, we would like to hold a BBQ dinner followed by a country music show on Sunday night. The cost will be $35 ($20 for students). In order to organize this event, we need to know now if you plan to attend. Please indicate this in your preregistration information.

Abstract Deadline. The deadline for submitting abstracts for contributed sessions is November 15. The best way to do this is to fill out the form on the home page. Next best is to send us a TeX file by email. If all else fails, mail us a hard copy. Indicate any times when you cannot speak.

Registration. The registration desk will be open on Friday evening before the conference, and everyday during the conference. The registration fee is $80 except for students ($40) and low-income participants ($40 if income is less than $15000). The registration can be paid with cash, U.S. Check, or Visa/Mastercard.

Support. We expect that after other conference expenses have been paid, some funds will remain to assist with local expenses for attendees who have had to pay a substantial portion of their own costs. Students, beginning researchers, and participants from less developed countries are particularly welcome to apply. Forms to apply for assistance will be distributed at the meeting, and will require a detailed list of expenses and a statement of sources of (partial) support, if any.

Transportation. Several major airlines fly to Nashville. Loew's Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel is located across the street from the Vanderbilt campus. It is about 8 miles from the airport. You can take a shuttle bus (approximately $8) or taxi (approximately $15) to your hotel.

Hotels. We have negotiated special conference rates at the Conference Hotel (Loew's Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel) and at several nearby motels. We would like to encourage participants to stay at Loew's if at all possible to save us meeting room costs.
