Geometry, Analysis, and Topology Group in the Mathematics Department at Texas A&M University

The Geometry, Analysis, and Topology Group had a Group Infrastructure Grant (GIG) from the National Science Foundation for the period September 1, 1996 to August 31, 1999. This award enabled the investigators to undertake indisciplinary research projects, to develop curricular infrastructure within the Department of Mathematics, to supervise and mentor graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, and to engage in outreach activities.

Although the group is no longer actively working together as a whole, the members are continuing to pursue the goals of the grant, as is the Department of Mathematics collectively through its VIGRE grant that started June 1, 2000.

The following is a snapshot (May 2002) of some of the principal investigators' current projects. A record of the activities of the GAT seminar is also available online.

• Harold P. Boas is editor of the Notices of the American Mathematical Society, 2001-2003.
• Huai-Dong Cao is on leave from Texas A&M until May 2003 as Associate Director of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM).
• Paulo Lima-Filho continues his research in algebraic geometry and topology. He is a principal investigator on an NSF Biocomplexity Incubation Activity and on an NSF/CBMS conference on Solving Polynomial Equations.
• Jon T. Pitts is completing a term as Special Assistant to the Provost and Executive Liaison Officer. He and Huai-Dong Cao are the principal investigators on the NSF grant that helps support the Texas Geometry and Topology Conference.
• Peter Stiller is a co-principal investigator on an NSF Biocomplexity Incubation Activity and is an Associate Director of the Institute for Scientific Computation.
• Emil J. Straube is supervising two PhD students and pursuing research in several complex variables that is supported by an NSF grant (joint with Boas).
• Rekha R. Thomas moved to the University of Washington in fall 2000. Her research in computational algebra, discrete optimization, and combinatorics is supported by an NSF grant.
