Title: An algebraic model for topological quantum computation

Abstract:
It has been 10 years since Kitaev and Freedman proposed a model
for quantum computation based on topological phases of matter.
Although serious experimental hurdles remain, the mathematical picture is
becoming clearer.  I will discuss modular tensor categories as models
for topological phases of matter, with an eye toward quantum computation.
