Abstract

We present and analyze a new adaptive finite element method (AFEM) for a discontinuous Galerkin formulation of a model second-order elliptic problem. The AFEM marks exclusively according to a residual type estimator and performs a minimal element refinement. Non-conforming mesh are considered and the method is designed to keep the level of non conformity uniformly bounded. We prove that the AFEM is a contraction for the sum of the energy error and scaled error estimator for any polynomial degree.
