PRE-REU PROGRAM: Signal and Image Analysis

2008 MCTP Brochure

OBJECTIVES:

All MCTP programs:

  • are intended to increase the student's joy in mathematics, deepen the student's knowledge of and skill in mathematics, and encourage the student to future study and research in mathematics,
  • are open to US citizens and alien residents, and
  • provide a stipend expected to be enough to cover more than transportation, housing, food, and other expenses.
Application review will start March 15, 2008 and continue until the programs are full.

The three MCTP programs:

  • Pre-REU: This is a program intended for 20 students who have completed through multivariable calculus, but who are not yet ready for a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). This summer the program will concentrate on Signal and Image Analysis, a hot topic in the world today where accurate transmission of data and images is vital.
  • Bridge program for current juniors: This program is intended for 15 students who will enter their last year of college in the fall and who are considering graduate school in the mathematical sciences. The purpose of the program is to supplement the courses the students have taken so as to better prepare them for their senior courses and to encourage them to go to graduate school in the mathematical sciences. The areas of emphasis will be algebra and real analysis. So it is expected that the students will have taken at least one course in linear algebra and one in advanced calculus, sometimes called real analysis.
  • Bridge program for entering graduate students: This program is intended for 15 students who will enter some graduate school in mathematics in the fall. The purpose of the program is to supplement the students' knowledge so that they are either ready for first year graduate work or for advanced undergraduate work. Acceptance into a mathematics graduate program leading to a Ph.D. is required.
