AP Calculus AB Institute
for Inexperienced Instructors

The AP Calculus AB Institute for new teachers will cover the content of the course,
with an emphasis on approaching the material graphically and intuitively before practicing
the analytical questions found in typical textbooks. Changes in the AB syllabus are addressed:
specifically slope fields and changes in the justification of increasing, decreasing, maximums,
minimums, etc. Hints and practice for the AP test, the use of graphing calculators, and
grading free response questions using the grading standard are also included.
Internet and computer resources for calculus are included, as well as hands-on activities
that increase student comprehension and engagement.
AP Calculus Consultant Beverly
McCarthy Health Careers High School, San Antonio, Texas.
Beverly has taught Advanced Placement Calculus AB for eighteen years, first at
Tom C. Clark High School, San Antonio, TX, then at Health Careers High School.
She is a consultant for the College Board and has presented at one-day and
two-day workshops in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, at summer institutes in
Texas and New Mexico, and has served as a grader for the AP
test for the past seven years. In February 2005, she was awarded the Siemans
Award for Advanced Placement. From 1993-1996, she was associated with the
Calculus Connections Project, headed by Dr. Tom Dick of Oregon State University,
where she was a grant winner and a teacher leader. As a teacher leader, she
assisted teachers in the use of graphing calculator technology for teaching
calculus. she holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from George Washington University
and a Master of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Texas at
San Antonio.
