Title: Modeling and optimal design of periodic optical structures

Place: 503 Blocker

Abstract:

This talk will be an overview of some computational and mathematical issues in the design of two types of periodic micro-optical structures: blazed diffraction gratings and photonic crystals. For the case of diffraction gratings, finite element methods and a simple preconditioning strategy will be discussed, along with approaches to solve the nonsmooth shape design problem. For photonic crystals we briefly outline the application of the preconditioned subspace iteration method of Bramble, Knyazev, and Pasciak for calculating energy gap structures of photonic crystals, and an approach for solving an associated problem of optimal design.
