Abstract

We consider the deformation of a thin shell under a point load acting normally to the midsurface of the shell. We simplify first the classical shell equations to what may be called the equations of a ''mathematician's shell''. We demonstrate that, depending on the shell geometry, the equations hide all the three basic classes of PDE's: the elliptic, the hyperbolic and the parboloic. Based on the simplified equations we characterize the mathematical nature of the deformation due to the point load in different shell geometries. Some finite element modeling results are given.
