Abstract

We shall discuss hp-version discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element discretizations for the numerical solution of linear and nonlinear elliptic problems. The talk will give a short review on a priori results and will focus on a general approach for the (residual-based) a posteriori error analysis of these schemes. The corresponding local error indicators are explicit in h (local element size) and p (local approximation order) and can be combined easily with some suitable hp-adaptive refinement procedures. The performance of the resulting hp-adaptive DG methods will be illustrated with a couple of numerical experiments for different applications. We will show that exponential rates of convergence can be achieved, even if the exact solutions exhibit local singularities.
