Abstract

A new family of mixed finite element methods for the Stokes and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented. It is inf-sup stable and consistent, such that arbitrarily high order approximations can be achieved by increasing the polynomial degree. Furthermore, the discrete velocities are pointwise divergence free, therefore allowing to apply continuous Navier-Stokes result. We will discuss a discontinuous and a continuous branch of this family and address its relation to the MAC scheme.
