Title:An introduction to group actions on the circle be homeomorphism

Speaker:James O'Quinn
Title:The Ornstein-Weiss Quasitiling Theorem
Abstract:The Ornstein-Weiss Quasitiling Theorem roughly states that approximately invariant finite subsets of a group can almost be tiled by translates of finitely many subsets of the group with nice invariance properties. I will discuss the ideas behind this theorem and give a proof for it.

Title:Some remarks on FLp actions
Abstract:I will discuss property FLp - an analog of property (T). I'll sketch an argument that property (T) implies measure preserving property FLp. Based on a work in progress with Alan Czuron.

Title:A crash course in operator K-Theory
Abstract:Operator K-Theory is a pair of functors, associating to each C^*-algebra A a pair of abelian groups K_0(A) and K_1(A), containing information about the structure of A. In this talk, I will show how these groups are constructed, some basic computational tools, and (time permitting) the calculation of K-groups of C*-algebras associated to groups and dynamics.

Title:Coarse embeddings under group extensions
Abstract:I will be going over a paper by Arzhantseva and Tessera (2017) which proves, by construction, that admitting a coarse embedding into Hilbert space is not preserved under group extension."

Title:Mixing Properties and Comeager Subsets of Act(G,X,\mu)
Abstract:One of the early results in measurable dynamics, due to Halmos, is the fact that ergodic transformations form a comeager subset of the set of Aut(X,\mu). I will discuss several similar results when the group acting is not $\mathbb{Z}$. In particular, I will be concerned with groups that have property (T) or the Haagerup Approximation Property.

Title:Thin Orbital Graphs and Periodic Groups
Abstract:I will discuss the periodicity for some finitely generated groups of homeomorphisms of a Cantor set with certain dynamical properties, and give examples if time allows.
