DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS
TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY
MATH CLUB
MAA/PME
The Texas A&M Math Department has student chapters of two national mathematics
organizations, the Mathematical Association of
America (MAA) and Pi Mu Epsilon .
These organizations attempt to educate students about math outside their
typical course work and to give them an understanding of possible careers in
math and math-related fields.
Texas A&M's MAA student chapter is open to all students that have an interest
in mathematics. There are no scholastic requirements such as class standing or
grade point average. Students from any major are welcome to join. The cost of
membership is $20 per year for a student who chooses to
receive either The College Mathematics Journal, Mathematics Magazine, or Math
Horizons. For students who choose The American Mathematical Monthly, the cost
is $30 per year. In addition to receiving their choice of journals, students
will receive discounts on meeting registration fees and MAA publications,
information on graduate study and career opportunities, information about
speakers, and opportunities to participate in student paper sessions at
section meetings.
Pi Mu Epsilon is an honorary mathematics organization. Student are required
to meet certain requirements to join Pi Mu
Epsilon. There is a $20 lifetime membership fee. This includes a one-year
membership to the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal.
The two organizations share student officers
and hold joint monthly meetings and
events. At the meetings, speakers are invited to talk to the group. We
often arrange for prospective employers to visit and give presentations
about their companies to the members. Additionally, we sponsor special
lectures given by different faculty members who volunteer their time and
knowledge. We also distribute information about departmental
activities and regional conferences and contests in mathematics.
Events we participate in include Big Event, Pi a Prof
, and the Texas A&M high school math contest. This year, 4 members attended
the Joint Mathematics Conference in Washington D.C. in January, and 9
students will attend the
Texas Section MAA Conference in Austin on April 7th.
