Why I want to be a Math Major

"Mathematics takes us into the region of absolute necessity, to which not only the actual world, but every possible world, must conform." -Bertrand Russell

I want to be a math major because I believe math runs the world. Every possible major you could choose involves math in some form or fashion. Every person uses mathematical skills daily whether they are at work, at home, or just out running errands. Math is vital and intertwines with every aspect of life. I personally love math because I love solving problems. I think one of the greatest highs in education is when you are finally able to figure out a problem that seemed impossible to begin with. In highschool, I took the highest math classes offered, unlike most of my friends. Oftentimes, after major stressing over not understanding what was going on in those classes, they would ask why I put myself through so much crap if I did not have to. I do it because I am addicted to math. I am one of those people who will not give up on a problem until it is solved. I get so frustrated when I can not come up with the correct answer that it almost becomes an obsession to crack the problem. I want to be a math major because it opens doors to many different types of jobs. Both of my parents jobs heavily rely on math. My father owns his own engineering/surveying business and my mother teaches math to middle school students. I love the idea that one subject can get you so far in life. If I want to teach, I can teach. If I want to work for a business, I can work for a business. If I want to be a doctor, I can be a doctor. If I want to be a lawyer, I can be a lawyer. The possibilities are truly unlimited with a math degree. I really just want to be a math major because I want to be successful in life and I know math is a definite route to achieving this dream. Math is the greatest.
