Getting a Minor in Mathematics is Easy

Non-math majors can obtain a minor in mathematics by meeting the following requirements:

  1. 4 credits: Math 151, or 171, or their equivalent
  2. 4 credits: Math 152, or 172, or their equivalent
  3. 6 credits: to be selected from Math 220, Math 222, or 300 - 400 level Mathematics courses (MUST be taken at A&M).
    *NOTE*Only one of Math 222 or 304 can be taken to satisfy the minor, not both, due to the course content.
  4. 3 credits: a 400 level Mathematics course (MUST be taken at A&M)
  5. earn a C or better in each course.

None of Math 131, 141, 142, 365, 366, 367, 368, 403, or 4851. may be used to satisfy requirements 1 through 4 above.

*NOTE 1* The 9 hours of upper-level courses MUST be taken at Texas A&M University.

*NOTE 2* Only one of Math 222 or 304 can be taken to satisfy the minor, not both, due to the course content.

Students wishing to earn a minor in mathematics do not need to visit the Mathematics Department to do so. They should see their advisor, and inform them of their intention to earn a minor in mathematics, and to have that information entered into SIMS.

The department also wants to point out to students who are majoring in engineering or one of the sciences that it might not take more than another 15 to 20 hours to get a double major in mathematics. If that is of interest to you, contact Mathematics Undergraduate Program Office.
