The meeting began at 2:15 p.m. There were four topics put up for discussion: Topics –  New Math 471 course, University Studies Degree - Proposed Areas of Concentration, Course Change Requests for Math 302 and 220, Math Awareness Month Report.  Below is a summary of each.

Topics-

New Math 471 Course. Dr. Maurice Rahe presented a proposed syllabus for a new course to be titled, Communications and Cryptography II, with justification provided in the form of several news articles on the latest technologies being used in the field. After a discussion and some changes to the prerequisites, generalization of the topics to be covered, the committee gave its approval to proceed with the new course request.  The revised syllabus can be viewed by clicking here.

University Studies Degree - Proposed Areas of Concentration
.  Dr. Vince Schielack's area of concentration inMathematical Foundations was completed and turned into the Dean for further processing.  Dr. Geller presented two new areas of concentration, one titled Mathematics for Business and one titled Mathematics for Applications.   After a discussion, the title of the latter was changed to Mathematics for Professionals and a final version of the degree plan was completed.  Please click here to view a copy of the Mathematics for Business degree plan, and here for a copy of the Mathematics for Professionals degree plan.  Both of these have also been sent to the Dean for further processing.

Course Change Requests for Math  302 and Math 220.  Dr. Stecher will work with Dr. Hobbs on the new syllabus for Math 202, since Dr. Hobbs served on a committee last year that addressed changes that the Computer Sciene department wanted in the current Math 302.  The course number is being lowered to Math 202 so that lower level CPSC majors are eligible to take the course.  The committee agreed to put forth a request to change the title of Math 220 from Discrete Mathematics to Foundations of Mathematics.  In addition, paperwork will need to be done in the near future to have Math 220 re-approved as a Writing Intensive (W) course.

Math Awareness Month Report. Dr. Mogilevsky gave a report on Math Awareness Month plans that include a lecture by Dr. Georgia Benkhart on April 10 and 11, a lecture by Dr. Rob Bendetto on April 24th and the Math Mini-Fair on April 28th.  The fair will consist of the final round of the Math Talent Search, two lectures,  and various exhibits.  A pizza lunch will also be served.  For complete listing of events, please click here.

The meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
