The meeting began at 3:00 p.m. There were two topics put up for discussion: Topics – New Freshman Course, New Math 471 course. Below is a summary of each.
Topics-
New
Freshman Course. Dr. Rojas gave a
powerpoint presentation of a new freshman course aimed at exposing
freshman to math in a 'friendly' way; no proofs or theorems. The
specifics of the course have not yet been determined, so it can be run
as either a 1 hour or a 3 hour course. Some of the topics include
coding, compression of data, sequence alignment, and algebraic
equations. The committee suggested teaching the course next fall
as a Math 289 course for 3 hours credit to our majors. Dr. Rojas
will visit with Dr. Boggess about the possibility of his teaching it
this coming fall 2007. To see the powerpoint presentation on the
course, click here. To see the proposed
syllabus, click here.
New Math
471 Course. A final draft of the new course
request and syllabus for the new Math 471 course was presented to the
committee. After a few minor typographical error corrections, the
request will be sent forth for approval. The syllabus can be
viewed by clicking here.
Respectfully submitted,
