MCTP will not happen in 2014

Mentoring through Critical Transition Points (MCTP):

There are four programs in our MCTP program.

The first is SMaRT Camp, which is a two-week summer program intended to facilitate interest in mathematics for 20 advanced high school students, ages 14-18, who are US citizens or permanent residents. The camp will provide an intensive learning environment in which students will learn not only useful mathematical facts, but also how to approach mathematical problems, how to prove mathematical statements, and how to write the results. This year's camp will be 9 (arrival)-22 (departure) June 2013. Applications are due by 29 March 2013.

There are three undergraduate to beginning graduate school MCTP programs running concurrently 23 June (arrival) - 27 July (departure). Application review will start on 1 March 2013 and continue until the program is filled.

  • Pre-REU: This is a program intended for 20 students who have completed at least two semesters of college calculus including at least two courses in mathematics studied at an institution of higher learning, but who are not yet ready for a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). All students must be at least 18 years old at the start of the program. This summer the program will concentrate on Signal and Image Analysis, a hot topic in the world today where accurate transmission of data and images is vital.
  • Bridge program for current juniors: This program is intended for 15 students who will enter their last year of college in the fall and who are considering graduate school in the mathematical sciences. The purpose of the program is to supplement the courses the students have taken so as to better prepare them for their senior courses and to encourage them to go to graduate school in the mathematical sciences. The areas of emphasis will be algebra and real analysis. So it is expected that the students will have taken at least one course in linear algebra and one in advanced calculus, sometimes called real analysis.
  • Bridge program for entering graduate students: This program is intended for 15 students who will enter some graduate school in mathematics in the fall. The purpose of the program is to supplement the students' knowledge so that they are either ready for first year graduate work or for advanced undergraduate work. Having applied to a mathematics graduate program eventually leading to a Ph.D. is required for admission with acceptance of some program for an MS or Ph.D. required for attendance.
