Honeymoon in Spain I (August 2005)
Since Jill's travels in the past had been pretty much
exclusively to places where I had not been before (and
therefore the other way around as well), we had to look a bit
for somewhere to go for our honeymoon. Southern Spain was a
good choice, though, since neither of us had been there,
there's always good weather, and it's got a bit of history to
see as well.
So, here we are: Jill and me (on an occasion to wear a funny
beard for once), and the little vehicle that took us around
the country (smaller than anything you probably can get here
in the U.S.; its name is "Ford Ka" — so small they don't
even need the "r" in "car"...)
The first part of our trip was to the region around Malaga and
Granada. Here's one of the cities we saw on our way:
This is an area that still has lots of castles from
the early medieval times it was settled by Muslims. These
being significantly more developed and civilized people than
what the rest of Europe had to offer at the time, their
castles are just fantastic. In particular, the place everyone,
us including, wants to see is the Alhambra in Granada. This
is it from the outside (the newer part on the left, the older
one from which only the foundations remain on the right):
It gets better on the inside, which is incredibly richly
decorated (I wished I could read Arabic to read what all those
inscriptions mean):
From Granada, we drove back to Malaga where we spent one more
day. The arena on the left hosts bull fights and there was
even one on. We pondered the idea of seeing it, though with
mixed feelings about the fact that the bull is usually killed;
the fight was sold out, though, so that we didn't have to make
a decision.
