New house (March 2007)
For the first year and a half here at A&M, Jill and I
still lived in Austin and I had an appartment in College
Station where I stayed from Monday night to Thursday
morning. When Jill was offered an Instructor position in the
math department in January (two weeks before the semester,
i.e. with somewhat short notice :-) we had to find a new house
to live in on equally short notice.
That took a little stamina and was a bit of a frustrating
process at times, but we both feel that in the end we found
pretty much the best thing we could have wanted from a
house. Here are the stats: it's fairly large for only two
people (2300 sq.ft. or 225 square meters), on a reasonably big
lot (approx. 0.4 acres or 1500 square meters), built in 1994,
15 minutes by car and 30 by bike from the university, and
affordable. And, in my view, the best thing is that it backs
against a protected greenbelt with a forest, so we don't need
a backyard fence and nobody will ever build there. How much
better does it get?
Here are some pictures. Let's start with the outside, front
and back:
Then here's kitchen (the counter tops have in the meantime
been replaced by granite) and our dining area:
Here's our living room with my lovely wife:
And finally, here's the backyard, both from the patio as well
as from the place where I sit in my office looking out of the
window:
