Germany in the summer (June 2007)
Some conference or other takes me to Europe most summers, and
there's often a way to go see some of the towns and places
where I grew up in southern Germany. This here, for example,
is Tübingen:
And this is a view of the Schwäbische Alb, a high plateau
not far from which we lived and the view of which has
ingrained itself into my memory as the symbol of where I'm
from:
The occasion for me to go to Europe that summer was a trip to
Oberwolfach, a mathematical research and conference center
(picture below left) nestled in solitude in the Black Forest,
a mountainous and often steep area with small villages tucked
into the bottom of valleys. It's the perfect place to be
sequestered for a research conference:
Later that summer we also drove from my parents' place to
Zurich in Switzerland, passing by old castle ruins and
strolling through Stein am Rhein on the Rhine at the border
between Germany and Switzerland. Much of that city's center is
medieval:
