Ride across Iowa (August 2007)
Some 35 years ago, a few people started a prank to dare each
other to ride all the way across Iowa with their bikes, about
500 miles. At Texas A&M we say that if you do it twice it
becomes a tradition, and they've done it every year
since. Except that these days there's more than 10,000 people
doing it, camping in tents every night (luggage is transported
by big 18-wheelers), riding 50 to 80 miles each day for a
week, and eating mountains of food in
little towns on the way that may in some cases have only a
couple hundred people living there.
Jill being from Iowa, we thought we should do that once too,
and with Jill's dad and a couple of friends of his, we did it
in the summer of 2007, a really nice experience sharing the
road with that many people. Below are a few impressions from
that ride:
