Comments on the textbook for Math 407, Fall 2011

Here are some corrections and amplifications to the textbook, Complex Analysis with Applications by Richard A. Silverman, Dover Publications, ISBN 9780486647623.

Chapter 1, Problem 3(d), page 11
The numerator of the fraction should be \((1+i)^9\), not \((i+i)^9\).
Chapter 1, Problem 14, page 12
The conclusion of Problem 14 is incorrect. The conclusion should be that two of the points lie on opposite ends of a diameter of the unit circle, and the other two points lie on opposite ends of another diameter.
Chapter 1, Problem 15, page 12
There is a typographical error in part (c). The numerator of the fraction should be \(\sqrt{3}-i\) instead of \(\sqrt{3-i}\).
Chapter 2, Theorem on page 14
The word “rectangle” must be understood as “closed rectangle”. In other words, the rectangle contains its edges.
Chapter 2, Problem 8 on page 21
The final sentence of the problem is incorrect. That sentence should read as follows: “Show that this cannot happen unless \(\alpha=0\) or \(\alpha\) is a negative real number.”
