This course is an introduction to the algebraic concepts of groups, rings, and fields, with an emphasis on modular arithmetic. Applications include topics in number theory and coding theory.
The course covers Chapters 1, 2, 4, and 5; and other topics if time permits.
The instructor is Dr. Harold P. Boas (email boas@tamu.edu, telephone 979-845-7269). The instructor holds office hours in 202 Milner Hall from 10:30 to 11:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday; and also by appointment.
There will be a short quiz on most days. The average of the best ten quiz scores will have the same weight as one exam score.
There will be examinations in class on June 12 (Friday of the second week of classes) and on July 1 (Wednesday of the last week of classes). The registrar has reserved July 2 for final examinations for the first summer session, but this class will not have a final examination on that day.
The three grades (the two exams and the quiz average) will be averaged to determine the course grade according to the standard scale: you need an average of 90% for an A, 80% for a B, 70% for a C, and 60% for a D.
