Opening a terminal window

Although you are probably using a graphical interface to Unix, sometimes you will need to type instructions to Unix at a command prompt. You typically do this in a terminal window.

If you do not already have a terminal window open on your screen, you should be able to select one from a menu. For example, under the KDE interface, click on the K button to bring up the start menu, and look for a "Terminal" entry on the System menu or on the Utilities menu. Or there may be a terminal icon that you can click on the task bar. Alternatively, you can click the right mouse button in the background of the screen, select "Run command" from the menu that appears, and type in "konsole" or "xterm". Under other X-Windows interfaces, you can probably bring up a suitable menu by clicking one of the mouse buttons on the background area of the screen. If you cannot figure out how to call up a terminal window, you had better ask someone for assistance.

To verify that all is well, try typing the command "date" at the command prompt in your terminal window. After you press the Enter key, you should see the current date and time.
