ABSTRACT:
Let k be an infinite field. A map from k^m to k^n given by x to (f1(x),...,fn(x)) where each fi lives in k[x1,..,xm] is a parametrization of an algebraic variety V in kn. We will see how Groebner bases can be used to find a set polynomials in k[y1,..yn] whose zero set is V. Also, we will introduce a class of ideals called toric ideals and discuss methods for finding Groebner bases for them.
