Algebra and Number Theory
In hte 19th century, mathematics began its rapid ascent into an abstract world where is thrived still today. So successful was the development of analysis in the 18th century that it seems only natural that the philosophy of abstraction whose principal servant is symbolism would turn its attention in other directions. Two such areas to receive the "treatment" were algebra and number theory. Though number theory had a great boost from Fermat and Euler, there was much to do. Even the most fundamental result of equations, the existance of solutions, had not been resolved. by 1800. A collection of mathematician equal to any of any century or time produced mathematics during this time, the consequences of which are still being worked through.
You will no doubt see the level of abstraction sharply up in these reading. Reading through the mathematics will take more time.
