Math 311-200 — Test 2 Review

Extra office hours. I will have extra office hours on Tuesday, from 10-11 am and from 2-3 pm.

Material covered.

• Chapter 2, section 2.4
• Chapter 3, sections 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.5 (skip Theorem 3.6)
• Chapter 4, sections 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.5, and 4.6. You should also know the structure of the characteristic polynomial; that is, that
  p_A(λ) = λⁿ - (trace(A))λ^n-1 + ... + (-1)ⁿ det(A)
  
• Chapter 5, sections 5.3 and 5.7 (nonlinear forces, only). As sample problems from section 5.7, do 6 and 7. (These will be part of the next homework assignment.)
• Chapter 6, section 6.1 (Know the definition of an inner product.)

Calculators. Calculators will be allowed.

Notation. You should know the notation that we have have used for row reduction, various vector spaces, coordinate vectors, etc.

Structure. There will be 4 to 6 questions, some with multiple parts. The questions will be similar to ones done for homework or as examples done in class or in the text. There will be one question on definitions; this will be worth 5-10 points. Material from chapters 2 and 3 will be worth 25 to 30 points, and material from chapters 4 and 5 will be worth 60 to 70 points.
