This Spring the Math Dept. is offering a special topics course (MTH 489) on the Differential Geometry of curves and surfaces. We will apply techniques from Vector Calculus and Linear Algebra to study the geometry of curves and surfaces in 3-dimensional Euclidean space. Applications of Differential Geometry include: (1) Computer graphics -- Pixar animators use Differential Geometry. (2) Engineering -- Efficient (e.g. aerodynamic) shape design, Control Theory and Robotics. (3) Physics -- Einstein's theory of relativity. Prerequisites: Vector Calculus (MTH 221/410) and Linear Algebra (MTH 222/304/311). As a 'special topics,' the course may not be available for pre-registration. For this reason IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU CONTACT THE INSTRUCTOR, Dr. Robles at robles@math.tamu.edu, if you are interested in the course.
