Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2008 16:18:11 -0500 (CDT) From: "Cockerham, Jill Marleigh" Subject: Summer Math Teaching Assistant Opportunity for Undergraduates Howdy! This summer I am teaching two 3-week math courses with Duke University's Talented Identification Program (TIP), held at the Texas A&M campus. Duke TIP is currently searching for a teaching assistant for these two courses. Duke TIP is currently filling positions on a first come first serve basis, so please apply as soon as possible. More information is available at http://www.tip.duke.edu/about/employment/ta.html Summer Session I: Algebra II Employment Dates: June 10 - July 6 Summer Session II: Geometry Employment Dates: July 10 - Aug 3 Salary begins at: $1200 per session Duke provides a personal dorm room and on campus meal plans if requested. Information about how to apply is available here: http://www.tip.duke.edu/about/employment/how_to_apply.html Because the summer sessions are approaching quickly, Duke TIP is currently accepting faxed and email applications, reference letters, and resumes in additional to the traditionally mailed applications. E-mail Elizabeth Morgan at EMorgan@tip.duke.edu if you are interested in applying. ABOUT DUKE TIP: Duke TIP campus-based Summer Studies Programs offer gifted students in grades 7-10 the opportunity to learn highly challenging material at a rate commensurate with their advanced abilities. Students enroll in a single Duke TIP-designed course for three weeks of in-depth study and attend nearly 40 hours of class each week between Monday morning and Saturday afternoon. Summer Studies Programs are offered on several college campuses. These programs provide young scholars the unique opportunity to experience college classroom instruction and residence hall life. TEACHING ASSISTANT POSITION: A minimum of two years of college coursework, including some concentrated study in math is required; candidates nearing completion of undergraduate coursework or currently pursuing graduate-level studies are preferred. Experience teaching or tutoring is helpful, as is staff or participant experience with programs for the academically gifted. Applicants must possess a genuine interest in the academic, social, and emotional growth of adolescents and a willingness to work cooperatively with others. Duke TIP Teaching Assistants must exhibit a positive attitude and serve as a role model for students and other staff members. Duke TIP prefers to hire staff for two sessions during the summer. Duke TIP policy does not allow staff members to enroll in summer session courses or hold other jobs during the period of employment. Please contact me with any questions or if you are considering applying for this specific position. Sincerely, Jill Cockerham jcockerh@math.tamu.edu Milner 012 **************************************************************** From: [tazapata@neo.tamu.edu] To: , , "Grad-Students" Date: Thu, 17 Apr 2008 08:21:13 -0500 Greetings, My name is Todd Zapata and I am a Graduate student (Ph.D) in the ECE dept. This summer I will be an instructor in the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP). In short this program is for gifted 7th-10th graders (~12-15 yrs.) in which they will come to TAMU (college station) for a three week semester to receive lectures in the current research fields of Nanotechnology. I will give the main lectures on my topic of research (quantum computing). However, I am also responsible for scheduling other lectures from graduate students and professors. Ergo, I am curious if you would be interested in giving a talk. The nature of the talks should be void of graduate mathematics (I do not expect the students to know Diff. Eq.'s), otherwise the floor will be yours, i.e. what ever strategy you would like to take as long as it covers Nanotechnology. The best academic arguments I can give to persuade you to give a lecture are: i) As you prepare a lecture to teach the material you are researching to younger students your grasp becomes much better of the subject matter (I have encountered this in my life already and your understanding increases drastically). ii) This will look great on your resume. TIP is internationally known and respected. If you are interested, or know anyone who is, please email me as soon as possible with a general topic of what you would like to discuss (the coordinator at Duke is requesting a type of syllabus soon and I would like to give her a list of lecturers and topics). There will be two three week semesters this summer and each semester will have a different group of students, so it would be great if you could talk during both semesters. The semester dates are: June 16 - July 4 July 14 - August 1 and the class times are: M-F 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Sat 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Also, I would appreciate if you could forward this email to anyone you think might be interested but did not receive this forward. I would love to meet with all volunteers sometime at the beginning of the summer (I have a lot to do these last two weeks of school as I am sure you do too).
