The Mathematics department is proud to announce the *2019 SUE GELLER UNDERGRADUATE LECTURE* (as many of you know, Dr. Geller was a long-time mathematics professor and the director of our Honors program) The lecture is 6-7 p.m. on *Tuesday, March 19* (Tuesday after spring break) preceded by a reception 5:30-6 and followed by a discussion, in Blocker 117. The speaker is *Laura DeMarco* who is a *Professor of Mathematics at Northwestern University*. She will talk about The Mandelbrot set: What we know today. *Abstract:* The Mandelbrot set is one of the most famous objects in modern mathematics. We see images of it everywhere, but despite its popularity and decades of research, we still don't fully understand it. I will survey results about the Mandelbrot set, from its discovery to today. See http://www.math.tamu.edu/undergraduate/research/URLS/URLS.html for more details. As usual, pizza and drinks (for undergraduates) will be provided, and attendance qualifies as a Math 170 activity. Dr. DeMarco is an excellent speaker, so come, and invite your friends from other majors who might be interested. See y'all there, Michael Anshelevich Director of Undergraduate Research in Mathematics
