Title:  "Simulating the world around you on a computer"

Abstract:
In applied mathematics,we try to describe the world around us in 
mathematical terms (think: can we describe in formulas how the 
weather outside will look like tomorrow if we know how it looks 
today?). Within applied math, there is a sub-discipline called 
numerical analysis or scientific computing where we try to solve 
these equations on a computer because they are typically too 
complicated to be solved by hand.

Scientific computing has been spectacularly successful in 
providing a quantative understanding of the world around us. I 
will give a few examples of where it is used and a glimpse of the 
way it describes and solves problems. I hope to also show a bit 
why this is such an exciting field to work in!

There will be free food from Jin's. New Pi Mu Epsilon members 
from the spring will be inducted. Also, the new order of math 
proof shirts has come in and will be sold at the meeting for $15.
