P H Y S I C S C O L L O Q U I U M Prof. Andrew Strominger, Harvard University String Theory, Black Holes and the Fundamental Laws of Nature ABSTRACT In this colloquium I will explain how string theory provides a precise microscopic statistical derivation of the laws of black hole thermodynamics, including the Bekenstein-Hawking area-entropy law. Along the way a review will be given of Stephen Hawking's infamous information puzzle, as well as the current status of string theory both as a tool for solving a diverse array of problems in mathematics and physics and as a candidate for a fundamental theory of nature.
