Textbook: Algebra, by Thomas W. Hungerford

Course Description: (Credit 3.0 for each course)

This course covers the following topics (with respect sections in Hungerford:

  1. Basic group theory:
    Hungerford Chapter I, sections 1,2,3,4,5,6,8 and a little of 9.
  2. Advanced topics in group theory:
    Hungerford Chapter II, sections 1,2,4,5,6,7.
  3. Basic ring theory:
    Hungerford Chapter III, sections 1-6.
  4. Modules:
    Hungerford Chapter IV, sections 1,2,3,6.
  5. Field theory and Galois theory:
    Hungerford Chapter V, some of each section.

Prerequisite for MATH 654: MATH 653 or approval of instructor.

Grading: There will be a midterm and a final in each semester. Each homework will be graded.

2. Next, I encourage you to stop at my office during my office hours; there you can get individual help, and we can spend as much time as needed discussing your questions.
