Text: Robert V. Hogg, Allen T. Craig, "Introduction to Mathematical Statistics," 5th edition, Prentice-Hall, 1995.
Prerequisites: multivariate calculus.
Topics: Chapters 1-3 of the textbook.

Main notions of probability theory: distributions, random variables, independence (Chapter 1).

Multivariate distributions: conditioning, independence, correlation (Chapter 2).

Examples of common probability distributions: binomial, normal, Poisson (Chapter 3).
Exams: We will have an in-class midterm on Wednesday, October 29. The final exam is on Wednesday, December 10, 3:00-6:00 pm. No make-up exams will be given. If, under completely exceptional circumstances, you need to miss the midterm, the weight of the final will be adjusted accordingly. If you miss the final, you automatically fail the course. The exams are closed book, closed notes, and calculators are not permitted.
Homework: weekly, due Mondays in class. No late homework will be accepted; the lowest score will be dropped. You are encouraged to work together, but you must each turn in your own work.
Quizzes: in section, about every other week.
Grading: Section (homework, quizzes, participation) 25%, midterm 30%, final 45%.
Other important dates: October 10 (last day to add or drop a course), November 7 (last day to withdraw from a course).
