Abstract: This talk is intended as a tutorial in various techniques of free probability. Instead of giving a general overview, I will pick a single object---the free Poisson distribution---and use various methods to describe its various properties. The techniques are combinatorics, a very small amount of complex analysis, Fock space and other operator representations, and, time permitting, random matrices.
