Title: A random matrix model for pairs of standard Young tableaux of bounded height.
Time and Place: Wednesday, October 17, 2:00-2:55pm, Milner 317.
Abstract: The enumeration of pairs of standard Young tableaux of bounded height is of considerable interest in combinatorics, since such pairs are in bijection with permutations of bounded increasing subsequence length. We show how to enumerate such pairs via a unitary matrix integral. The integral can be asymptotically evaluated, giving a new proof of a celebrated theorem of Regev on the asymptotic number of permutations having increasing subsequence length bounded by an arbitrary fixed number. One of our main tools is the Colour-Flavour transformation from lattice gauge theory.
