We give a survey of recent developments concerning the relationship between Jacobi matrices, measures on the real line, orthogonal polynomials, and Herglotz functions. The presentation will be centered around coefficient stripping and its effect on these quantities. In particular we explain how one obtains sum rules in this way and why such identities are of interest.
